SNP need to do more on alcohol abuse
The number of premature deaths from alcoholic liver disease is now higher than deaths from heart attack, according to Scotland's top doctor. Responding to publication of the annual report from Chief Medical Officer Dr Harry Burns, Labour's Health spokesman Dr Richard Simpson said:
"We need the Scottish Government to redouble their efforts to prevent thousands of Scots are dying years earlier than they should. I am particularly concerned that deaths from alcohol-related liver disease are rising faster in Scotland than almost anywhere else in the world.
"It is vital that the Scottish Government increase its efforts to tackle alcohol abuse, follow through on the expert Group report on alcohol related brain damage (ARBD) and tackle the serious consequences of excessive drinking.
"The costs to individuals families, communities and the NHS of failing to promote an integrated and comprehensive plan at this serious alcohol problem is heavy and growing heavier every year.
"SNP ministers are failing to pass on the 6.7 per cent year on year increases that the UK Government is delivering for the NHS in England. Nicola Sturgeon should tell us where this money is being spent."
