But... the Tories wrecked it

After 1979, successive Tory governments were a disaster for the NHS. The Tories viewed the NHS not as a health service, but as a safety net providing only the most basic care. The Tories underinvested in the NHS. They cut thousands of acute and general hospitals beds. They let waiting times increase massively.. This was no surprise – the Tories had opposed the introduction of the NHS and had failed to prioritise it ever since. Their disastrous performance in running the NHS led it to be one of the worst performing healthcare systems in the Western world.

Despite the best efforts of its doctors and nurses, working in poorly equipped and crumbling buildings, the NHS was unable to meet the growing demands of a longer-living population. As medical technology advanced, a neglected NHS fell behind. Patients were waiting 18 months or more for necessary operations, and some patients were left on trolleys in hospital corridors.  The poorest people received the worst treatment.
