Labour: SNP must invest in universities now
Scottish Labour say that the SNP must come forward with new money to stop Scottish universities falling further behind those in England. Higher Education spokesperson Claire Baker spoke after today's report by the vice-chancellors' group of Universities UK.
Claire Baker said:
"This report confirms what we've suspected for some time, that Scottish universities are falling far behind the rest of the UK.
"Scotland's universities have historically been world leaders producing some of the world's finest minds but with less money
now going to universities in Scotland, and with less money to support Scottish students, this proud record is in jeopardy.
"The SNP have been far too slow to react to this, and in fact actually made a real term cut to university budgets last year.
What's more, their taskforce set up last year to look into this very issue, came up with few new ideas and no new money.
"The SNP must come forward with proposals that will ensure Scottish universities do not fall further behind and act now to ensure our universities remain among the best in the world."
