LABOUR CALL FOR ACTION ON CHILD CARE
Single parents are being forced to drop out of colleges across Scotland because of a growing crisis in the provision of child care in colleges.
In one case, at least 30 single parents dropped out from Kilmarnock College after its child care fund was exhausted in the first week of term.
Labour's Education Spokesperson Claire Baker said:
"There is a huge and unacceptable gap in funding for childcare places in Further and Higher Education across Scotland.
"I am aware of 30 students at Kilmarnock College alone who have been told there is no money for childcare and have had to withdraw from their courses.
"Colleges in Glasgow are experiencing similar problems and some students did not even start their courses this year because of the appalling lack of funding for child care.
"The SNP promised free Further and Higher Education for all. Instead, single parents struggling for better qualifications are paying the price of another broken promise."
