Iain Gray MSP, said:
"This polls shows two things - Devolution has been a success and most Scots want to remain part of Britain. It backs up once again that Labour is in touch with what most Scots want and is a slap in the face for the SNP and their ambition to break up Britain. "Scots appreciate the strength in being part of the union, particularly after the Labour government intervened to save our two biggest banks at the height of the credit crunch. Thousands of jobs were saved and with it the Scottish economy. "When Labour came into government in 1997 we recognised people wanted a closer say in how Scotland was run after two decades of Tory rule. We introduced Devolution. Ten years on we set up the Calman Commission to look at more powers for the Scottish Parliament. "A year ago Labour offered the SNP a referendum on a straight question and they ran away. Alex Salmond will only ever consider a referendum that is rigged. It is only right people want a say in how the country is run but I believe their top priority now is economic recovery. That is what Labour is focusing on and so should the SNP." 30/06/2009
Labour leader Iain Gray said the latest ICM poll for the BBC showed once again how consistent support was for the Union in Scotland.
