Regulation is the key
Bus Services in Scotland are not good enough - but other political parties refuse to do anything about it.
This is due to the failure of the forces which have dominated the bus industry since de-regulation in 1986. It's time for a fairer deal on buses. That’s why I lodged the Regulation of Bus Services (Scotland) Bill.
But the Bill has fallen because not a single MSP from any other party would support it - meaning it cannot proceed under the rules of the Scottish Parliament.
My Bill would have make it easier for local Councils to step in and regulate services by putting franchises for local bus services out to tender.
The Bill will also have extend free bus travel to people on the lower rate of Disability Living Allowance, as well as allowing community transport to accept free bus passes. Around £300 million of public money in Scotland goes to support bus services.
We are all entitled to a better say on bus services and standards. Regulation will give us that say - and I am determined to keep on campaigning for better local buses in Scotland. Please join me in that campaign by showing your support here.
