Graduated from Stirling University with an Honours degree in History and a PhD in Economic History.
Before his election to parliament he served as research officer for the Labour Party (1979-1983), Political Adviser to Neil Kinnock (1983-1985),Scottish Organiser of the Trade Unionists for Labour (1986 and 1987).
His main leisure interests are football, history and crosswords.
